We’re confident we can match you with a therapist who can work well with both of you, in office or online, so you can get to the root of your challenges.
Humans are designed to long for connection safety in their intimate relationship.
What Can Couples Counselling Help With?
Don’t wait until your relationship reaches a breaking point to ask for help. Couples counselling can give you a place to work on the patterns that are creating distance between you and your partner.
Even if you don’t think your relationship is “bad enough” for relationship therapy, you can still work on improving communication now. Our team will help you build or rebuild a foundation on which to build a life together.
-
Do conversations keep turning into the same argument? Does one of you retreat in the face of conflict, leaving issues unresolved? There’s no need to walk on eggshells in your own life. Therapy can help you slow the pattern and understand what each of you is trying to communicate.
-
After an affair or another breach of trust, relationship therapy can give you space to understand what happened and decide what you both need to rebuild trust.
-
Sometimes the problem isn’t constant conflict. Do you feel lonely in your relationship? Couples therapy can help you talk about what changed and work towards feeling more connected again.
-
New parenthood and caregiving mean adding an entire additional human being into your relationship. Likewise, career changes, moving, or other major transitions can shift how a relationship works. Therapy gives you space to adjust together and imagine the future.
-
Deployments, relocations, reintegration, and the uncertainty of military life can put additional pressure on a relationship for both partners. Couples counselling can help you work through those challenges together.
How Couples Therapy in Kingston Can Help You Reconnect
Relationship challenges can feel turbulent, even if the world around you keeps moving forward like nothing is happening. Couples counselling gives you the space to pause in the middle of a negative cycle and examine your challenges from a different angle.
We recognize it can feel vulnerable to begin counseling, because relationships are uniquely vulnerable. Your marriage therapist or couples therapist isn’t there to decide who’s right, however. They are there to provide a balanced, outside perspective and facilitate communication so both partners have a chance to feel heard.
Our couples therapists use relationship-focused approaches, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), to help you recognize the patterns that keep you stuck. From there, you can practise communicating your needs more directly and responding to each other differently.
You also don’t have to wait until separation feels imminent. Couples therapy is equally helpful when your relationship is fundamentally strong but stress, parenting, a transition, or unresolved hurt has started creating distance.
The sooner you begin counselling, the sooner you can imagine the future with less fear.
What to Expect From Couples Counselling
All therapy, including couples therapy, begins with a conversation. Your therapist will likely start by asking questions to better understand what brought you in and what each of you would like to change. You’ll look at what happens between you when conversations become difficult and what keeps that pattern going, which is the first step toward change.
As therapy continues, you may work through difficult conversations during your sessions and practise responding differently outside them. Your therapist will help both of you understand the work you’re doing so therapy feels collaborative.

Some couples also come to therapy because they want to strengthen their relationship before a problem becomes harder to address.

Couples counselling can provide a structured place to talk about infidelity and its impact on the relationship. Therapy may help you understand what rebuilding trust would involve and decide together what you want the relationship to look like moving forward.
